Around central Wisconsin: Loyal, Greenwood vote against consolidation

After nearly two years of debate, the school districts of Loyal and Greenwood won't consolidate.

Greenwood voted 736 to 581 and Loyal voted 623 to 378 on Tuesday against the consolidation referendum.

"Personally, I'm a little disappointed," said Loyal Superintendent Graeme Williams. "I worked pretty hard on this the past couple years, but it's something we as a district have to move forward on."

Both districts face significant declining enrollments and will be forced to consider reductions and ways to collaborate with other school districts to maintain courses, said Williams.

Greenwood also carries a debt of $4 million that will take until 2016 to pay off, said board president Bill Herr, who has already scheduled meetings with the teachers' union to discuss how they'll maintain curriculums.

obligations.

Market movers

NEW YORK -- Wall Street closed an uneasy session lower Wednesday as investors, uncertain if the worst of the credit crisis is over, refrained from extending Tuesday's huge advance.

Bear Stearns Cos. rose $2.58, or 2.6 percent, to $103.45, after its CFO's encouraging comments. Other financial stocks -- which have lagged other sectors this year -- rose as well but several pared their advance at the close.

E-mails detail student loan firm's drive for profits

E-mails written by managers of Iowa Student Loan Liquidity Corp., the nonprofit organization that dominates Iowa's college loan industry, show how the agency uses aggressive marketing tactics and seeks "continued hypergrowth."

Iowa's college students are among the most deeply in debt in the nation. That fact has led state lawmakers to examine whether Iowa Student Loan's strategies could be partly responsible.

The topic is on the agenda for a meeting today of the Iowa Legislature's Government Oversight Committee.

Although Iowa Student Loan was created by state government, it is a private, not-for-profit corporation. Today, the agency plays a lead role in guiding thousands of young Iowans in how to pay for their college educations.

Watchdog groups warn students not to rely too heavily on loans to pay for college, especially private loans, which are those offered by a bank or a loan agency such as Iowa Student Loan.

New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine on Thursday said he's willing to risk losing re-election by increasing highway tolls to try to resolve state fiscal woes.

The governor continued to refuse to detail how much he wants tolls to increase, but said he'll present a formal plan in January.
